RED SOX vs CUBS: Our Dream Scenario
First and foremost, I am not at all saying that this is definitely going to be the World Series matchup. I think and hope it is, but I am not making any guarantees.
What I am saying, however, is that a Red Sox vs Cubs World Series would be a dream for Major League Baseball. It'd be an awesome showcase for the fans, diehard or casual, and would be a nationwide event. I'm pretty sure it would set every single World Series TV record, and tickets would be virtually impossible to get.
Reason 1: The Teams
These are probably the two best teams in baseball right now. The Cubs pitching staff features Jake Arrieta, Kyle Hendricks, and playoff MONSTERS Jon Lester and John Lackey. Thats scary good. As for the Red Sox, dominant southpaws Chris Sale and David Price would take the hill followed by reigning Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello. There wouldn't be one lackluster pitching matchup all series. And for the offenses, they are PACKED with young, explosive talent. Imagine watching Kris Bryant and Mookie Betts go at it for 7 games? How about watching number one prospect Andrew Benintendi bashing balls off the Ivy and Javy Baez abuse the monster? Sluggers Hanley Ramirez and Anthony Rizzo would be launching balls clean out of the ballpark. This series would feature two explosive offenses against two dominant pitching staffs. I might faint, really.
Reason 2: The Player's Ties
This hurts a little. I would hate facing old faces such as Jon Lester and John Lackey. Those guys were warriors in Boston, and helped us win a ring in 2013. I'll forever remember the heroic performances those guys posted in the wake of the Boston Marathon Bombing, leading the City of Boston to a World Series parade that fall. Not to mention the fact that the Red Sox gave up Anthony Rizzo, and let former GM Theo Epstein go build a super team in Chicago's north side. As a diehard Sox fan, I would love nothing more to beat familiar face Joe Maddon, who manages the Cubs. However, I'd feel bad beating the Jon and John. Hey guys, its not too late to demand a trade to the good side.
Reason 3: History
There aren't many teams that have the history of the Sox and Cubs, and there aren't many better MLB cities out there. They play in two of the most historic stadiums in America, the setting would be truly unbelievable. The Cubs built up a massive, widespread fan base in their quest to end their title drought, and the Red Sox have the best fan base in the MLB. The Red Sox is Boston's Team. Sure, every one of our teams are dominant. But, in all reality, Boston is a baseball town. This would be about honor, about respect, and about pride.
Please, God, Please let this be the matchup.
Its only February. Damn, we have a long time until we have any idea who will be in the World Series, but if features the two teams that everyone thinks it will, it will never be forgotten. It'd easily go 19 games. No, seriously, if its Cubs vs Sox can we just have it last a month? This series is more than a bunch of baseball games between two teams. It's superstars vs superstars, friends vs foes, past vs future, and city vs city. Heres to a great MLB season, and to hoping we all see the World Series matchup we want. (Sorry, Cleveland).
