Sox Spotlight: David Price
First off, let me explain what "Sox Spotlight" is. From now to the start of the season, the SouthSide Baseball team of writers will be highlighting a member of the Red Sox. Each short "spotlight" segment will give you a glimpse of what they did last year, what they've done over their career, and how they'll help the Red Sox in the 2017 campaign.
Without further ado, the first Sox Spotlight of the season will feature Mr. 217 Million himself, David Price. Last year, David Price disappointed many Boston fans. Everyone looks at his season as a bitter failure, and they have a valid point. He did not pitch like a 217 million dollar pitcher; but then again, is that even possible?
Here's what Price did in 2016:
35 starts, 17-9, 3.99 ERA/1.20WHIP, 230 IP, 228K's
Over His career: 3.21 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 1600K's in 1671 Innings
What do these numbers mean? Well, Price was his usual self in 2016 when it comes to punching guys out. For everyone who says that he can't dominate without his fastball velocity that he lacked last year: Take a seat. His 2016 WHIP matched up fairly closely with his career WHIP, so really the only category that Price underperformed in (as compared to his entire career), was ERA. If he can stop those runs from crossing the plate, he'll be just fine. Last year was not a total bust for Price, contrary to what Sox Die-Hards think.
So, with that being said, its fair to give this guy a clean slate heading into 2017. Its never easy living up to a massive contract in year one, especially in Boston. So lets see what he can do this year.
Here's our Predictions for Price in 2017:
